The world through my viewfinder

Look Down

Light Over the Glen

Sun Shining Over the Fairy GlenLight overhead, the brightest star
A guide to illuminate
In all we see and all know
It is light that reveals truth
However occluded the path we walk
Light can always lead us to safety
So look up to the light
Search out its rays
Reach for its warmth
Light is always there
No matter how hard the darkness tries to convince us of its distance
We can always find it, if we look hard enough

Spring Flowers

Daisy Patch in North Wales
I’m writing this in NYC, I love the hustle and bustle – the crazy chaos. Last night I was sat in a park, looking up at some of New York’s tallest buildings and a strange thought sprang to mind – they need more flowers!

This spring shot was taken just a few weeks ago – walking in North Wales. No shortage of flowers on that hike. I love the simplicity of this shot – nothing fancy, just them being, pretty flowers amongst the meadow grasses.

Sometimes we need crazy chaos to contrast simple peace, together they give variety and perspective. I am grateful that in my life I have the opportunities to experience both.

Fragile Water

Water reflecting the sky amongst the trees

Sometimes it takes seeing something through the lens of a camera to realise just how beautiful and fragile it is.  This was shot on Moel Famau – a hill (almost a mountain) in North Wales just 20 minutes from home.  It’s one of my favourite places and I often go there to spend some quality time with my camera.  As I captured this image I couldn’t shake the thought of how precious our environment is – and how delicate.  This area of outstanding natural beauty (officially!) should be treated with respect and care, but so often I see rubbish left and tree branches snapped.

Water always conveys a sense of fragility – just as glass can shatter in a moment, it takes so little for us to destroy and pollute the waterways, rivers, streams and marshes – like the images it reflects with just one touch they can disappear forever.

Dubrovnik Rooftops

View from the walls of Dubrovnik across the rooftops

So many things about this beautiful place remain with you when you leave – but for me, it’s the Dubrovnik Rooftops that I remember the most.  Their intense colour set in contrast to the blues, grays and greens of their surrounding.  The richness of this amazing place never ceases to amaze me and the view from the walls affords you a glimpse of history, just think of all of those people through the years that worked to build and rebuild something so beautiful.

Dubrovnik Walls of Witness

Dubrovnik walls

The past is never really silent – it bears witness to all that it’s seen and cries out to the present, we’re just often too busy to listen.  The walls of Dubrovnik echo the stories of the Middle Ages, they’ve stood through an earthquake and the evidence of the siege in 1991 is almost impossible to miss, but as I walked around so many seemed oblivious to any of this.  It’s easy to be so in awe of the fabulous views as you travel around walls that you don’t see the story under your feet.
